“The glass coatings we have designed can control up to 75%-90% of the heat transfer that comes through the sun’s infrared wavelength. They also eliminate the harmful ultraviolet (UV) portion of the sun’s radiation that causes skin damage and discoloration of surfaces. The technology has been developed over about 3 years,” said Saeed Madarshahi, a representative of the company.

“The advantage of this technology is that there is no need to replace the existing glass or windows. Unlike solutions that require expensive replacement of entire windows, this coating can be applied to existing glass in older buildings and has a favorable effect on the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC),” he added.

“Unlike conventional glass, this technology does not transmit heat to the interior and just manages it. Even in winter, in cities where sunlight is a nuisance, this coating can be useful,” Madarshahi said.

In a relevant development in 2023, experts at Kaveh Glass Industrial group, an Iranian company, were also able to use nanotechnology to produce energy-efficient glass which reduces costs and increases comfort for customers.

Kaveh Glass Industrial Group has been able to produce energy controlling glass called EcoStar and EcoStar Plus using nanotechnology and receive a NanoScale Certification from Product Evaluation Unit of Iran Nanotechnology Innovation Council (INIC). EcoStar and EcoStar Plus products are industrially manufactured and currently available in the market.

Energy controlling glass controls energy transmission through conduction and radiation simultaneously and makes glass into an extremely effective element to reduce energy consumption, increases brightness, and provides visibility in the building, enhances the beauty of the façade while maintaining visible light transmission. These types of glass windows help materialization of the idea of buildings with large windows that bring inside light and beauty of the surroundings.

Kaveh's EcoStar Glass is a colorless energy controlling glass that is produced by the soft coat method. The metal oxide coating is deposited under vacuum conditions on the glass surface by a sputtering method and this coverage reflects short and long IR waves.

The appearance of EcoStar Glass is like ordinary double glazed windows and performs the same function in both light reflection and light transmission modes.
