Iranian Researchers Produce Coating to Prevent Spread of Fire
“We supplied coatings for construction and industrial steel structures that help in delaying fire and steel collapse in case of fire,” said Mahmoud Torabinejad, the managing director of the company.
“Steel loses its hardness at a temperature of 400 to 600 degrees Celsius, and by applying fireproof coatings on metal structures, these coatings turn into foam against heat, and this foam at a higher temperature of 220°C releases a harmless cooling gas that delays the instability of metal structures,” he added.
Noting that all formulations of this company's fireproof coatings are water-based and the product contains minerals like mica, silica, calcium carbonate and acrylics, Torabinejad added that the product has received special attention in Britain.
“We have received many orders from foreign countries like Canada, Australia and Russia,” he said.
In a relevant development in August, Iranian researchers at a knowledge-based company stationed at Pardis Science and Technology Park near Tehran had succeeded in designing and building a system based on WATER MIST which is used to control the fire at oil and gas wells and petrochemical refineries.
“Fire extinguishing systems based on WATER MIST, which is known as MVU (Mobile Ventilation Unit) in the world, are among the sanctioned items. This product is used in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries to control the fire of storage tanks or oil wells in the first moments of fire,” Mahmoud Dehqani, the managing director of the knowledge-based company, told ANA.
He explained that in the first moments of fire in oil wells and refineries, the system can raise the fire temperature from 1,300 degrees Celsius to 350 degrees Celsius, adding, “Therefore, the rest of the equipment will not be damaged. On the other hand, it controls the fire and makes extinguishing operations easier, and the firefighting team can easily approach the fire.”
“This system greatly reduces the amount of water used to extinguish the fire, and if 2,000 liters of water is used to extinguish an oil well fire within 4 hours, with this system, the fire will be extinguished with 1,000 liters of water within one hour,” Dehqani said.
He explained that the main reason for reducing water consumption in this system is high energy absorption, adding, “In normal mode, cooling is done by heating water, but in this system, cooling is done by evaporating water.”
