Iranian Researchers Use Red Seaweed to Produce Anti-Cold Nasal Spray
“Our product is a nasal spray to relieve the symptoms of cold, coronavirus and allergies. In the composition of this spray, carrageenan (red seaweed) has been used, which has many antimicrobial and antiviral properties. Also, the use of xylitol in its ingredients has increased the properties of this product, which is used to prevent middle ear infections,” Amirhossein Esmayeeli, a representative of the knowledge-based company, told ANA.
“It is effective in prevention and treatment of bacterial and viral infections of the respiratory system like coronavirus and cold symptoms and reducing the duration of the cold. It also prevents the spread of bacterial and viral infections to other respiratory organs,” he added.
“Treatment of dryness and itching of the nasal mucosa caused by colds, improving the air flow of the respiratory system, cleaning the nose in case of exposure to dust, smoke and pollen, auxiliary treatment after nasal surgeries, good durability in the nasal mucosa due to the presence of viscosity are other advantages of using this product,” Esmayeeli said.
Carrageenan (CRG) is a seaweeds material of type Rhodophyta from the Rhodophyceae (marine red algae) family. The weeds have a dry weight in the range 61.5%–67.5%. CRG is a hydrocolloid containing organic esters and salts of potassium, sodium and magnesium.
