“In less than the lifespan of three or four generations, the physics community in Iran has experienced significant quantitative and qualitative growth, and we currently have several thousand PhD graduates in physics in Iran,” Morad Sahrayee said.

“Mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology are core subjects in Iran’s secondary education system. It can be confidently said that the level of knowledge and general understanding of Iranian high school graduates is acceptable and close to international standards, with many Iranian students who are accepted into universities worldwide often being top performers in their respective fields,” he added.

“Education planners in the Islamic Republic of Iran have realized the necessity of joining international standard competitions and contests in the last decades of the previous century. Therefore, Iranian students are regular participants in several prestigious international scientific Olympiads,” the minister underlined.

“Iran joined the International Physics Olympiad in 1988, and our students have since won 36 gold medals, 68 silver medals, 39 bronze medals, and 12 honorable mentions. The absolute winner of the 1997 International Physics Olympiad was from Iran, and our country has frequently been among the top 5 or 10 teams in the world,” he added.

“Iran hosted the Astronomy Olympiad in 2009, the Computer Olympiad in 2017, and the Biology Olympiad in 2018. The second hosting of the International Physics Olympiad by Iran was supposed to be in 2023 but was postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and now we are hosting the Physics Olympiad,” Morad Sahrayee said.
