“For the first time, in Semnan province, we were able to successfully conduct urethral stricture surgery with the latest technology of the world by using a new generation of stenting,” Seyed Vahidollah Sadr Bolourian, a faculty member of the Islamic Azad University’s Shahroud branch, told ANA.

“The urethral stricture surgeries are very long, dangerous and complicated, and the operation that was performed today was with the stent technique,” he added.

Noting that the surgery’s technique is similar to the method used by cardiac stents which keep the coronary arteries open, Bolourian said, “In this new technique, the same place where the urethra is narrowed is replaced with a stent.”

He explained that the urethral stricture is a disease which recurs from time to time, adding that with this technique, which is considered a non-invasive method, the aforementioned complications are not observed.

A urethral (u-REE-thrul) stricture involves scarring that narrows the tube that carries urine out of the body, called the urethra. As a result of a stricture, less urine comes out of the bladder. This can cause problems in the urinary tract, such as infection.
