New Structure Designed in Iran to Improve Performance of Electric Car Engines

TEHRAN (ANA)- Researchers have designed new electric motor structures to improve the performance of electric vehicle engines which can reduce vibration and increase torque density and the engine’s life.

“We have introduced new structures for the propulsion system of electric vehicles that can settle the problems. The structures presented in this research project have had a significant efficiency compared to other motors, and the magnets are no longer affected by the centrifugal force,” said Mohammad Amirkhani, the project manager.

“Since the magnets have been relocated from the rotating part (rotor) to the stationary part (stator) of the motor, therefore, we will not need to use the previous inhibitors and making these motors will be much simpler and cheaper, and due to their simplicity, their construction will also be faster,” he added.

Amirkhani explained that given the new magnetic design that was presented for these motors, their torque density has increased and they occupy less space than the previous models and weigh less, adding, “By eliminating the demagnetization factors of the magnets, the efficiency of the electric motor is kept high in the long term. Also, the torque ripple, vibration and noise of the offered engines have been reduced.”

Earlier, in October, Iranian researchers had also succeeded in designing lithium-ion batteries which are one of the most common energy storage tools in electric cars.

“In a bid to help the country gain self-sufficiency in the field of lithium-ion battery cells that can be used in electric vehicles, we succeeded in designing and manufacturing the first battery cell in the country,” Ahmad Soleimani, a commercialization expert of Iran Space Research Center, told ANA.

“These batteries are designed with a capacity of 15 ampere-hour, an energy density of 168 watts per kilogram and a weight of 320 grams,” he added.

Soleimani described the ability to charge and discharge quickly, long life, high efficiency, low weight and low self-discharge as operational features of the lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles.

“Lithium-ion batteries provide users with the possibility of being used in electric vehicle battery packs, validation of imported cells using the supplied equipment, and a suitable platform for the development of lithium-ion batteries,” he added.
