Iranian University Develops Acoustic Emission to Detect Impact Damage on Aircraft
Researchers at the Amirkabir University of Technology have developed a method based on acoustic emission to detect impact damage on aircraft.
Acoustic Emission has become one of the most sought non-destructive evaluation techniques in structural health monitoring over the past few decades.
Fiber-reinforced polymer composites are widely used in various industries due to their desirable properties, such as high specific strength and stiffness, corrosion resistance, and high fatigue life.
These materials are, however, susceptible to various failures under out-of-plane loading. Low-speed impact loading is one of the most common loadings that may be applied to the composite structure during its service life.
The impact of a bird on the aircraft's body during take-off or landing, the fall of a tool during the aircraft maintenance process, or the impact of large hailstones on the composite body of the aircraft in stormy weather can damage the composite structure.
