Production of First Dry Biological Dressing from Amniotic Membrane in Iran

TEHRAN (ANA)- The director of research department at Royan Institute for Stem Cell Technology announced the production and commercialization of a dry biological dressing derived from the amniotic membrane (the innermost layer of the fetal membrane), which helps patients to experience faster wound healing and reduces treatment complications.

“This product is rich in extracellular matrix proteins, cytokines and growth factors and helps in faster tissue regeneration and repair. Also, due to its nature, it has low immunogenicity and is not rejected by the patient's immune system; therefore, the wound healing process is faster,” said Masoumeh Nouri.

“The amniotic membrane, which is discarded after the birth of the fetus, is collected from healthy donors under sterile conditions and processed and prepared in clean rooms. Due to its high richness in growth and nutrient factors and its appropriate physical structure, this membrane can be used as a wound dressing,” she added.

“One of the most important features of this dressing is that it can be stored at room temperature. This advantage makes the product easier to store and use for the patient and the medical staff, and eliminates the need for special equipment such as a refrigerator or freezer. This feature is specially important for patients living in remote areas and during transportation,” Nouri said.

Earlier, in June, Nouri had announced that all Iranians could benefit from the technology to save umbilical cord blood for later possible use.

“All citizens have the possibility to use cord blood storage and they can help maintain the health of their family members by doing so,” she said on the sidelines of a training meeting of technical experts of the cord blood bank of the company.

She underlined the importance of cord blood storage, noting, “Cord blood storage is more important for those people whose relatives have various chronic non-communicable blood diseases and immunodeficiency.”

Nouri stressed that medical science will move from drug therapy to cell therapy in the future which shows the importance of Royan's measures, adding, “Cord blood storage bank is a service which has been provided in pace with advanced countries and with the help of Iranian experts.”

She stated that Royan Institute for Stem Cell Technology has been active in Iran for over 15 years, adding, “In this period, as the first and largest blood bank in the Middle East, more than 180,000 cord blood samples have been stored.”
