Iranian Petrochemical Holding Company Makes Ultra-Heavy Methanol Reactors

TEHRAN (ANA)- Iran’s Petrofarhang Holding company underlined support for the country’s producers, saying that the Iranian experts have been able to produce methanol synthesis catalysts and ultra-heavy methanol reactors.

Javad Zare’pour, the managing-director of Petrofarhang Holding company, said that for the first time in Iran, the holding placed orders for the production of methanol synthesis catalysts, ultra-heavy methanol reactors, heat exchangers, and secondary reformers.

“The belief in the capabilities of Iranian engineers and experts is now institutionalized within the holding, and this will pave the way for a new outlook in the country’s petrochemical industry,” he added.

Zare’pour noted that in just two projects, Dana (Phase 2 of Sabalan Petrochemical company) and Siraf Energy, 24 specialized process equipment units were ordered from domestic new technology-based firms (NTBFs) and suppliers, preventing tens of millions of euros from being spent abroad.

Zare’pour explained that the equipment, weighing approximately 3,500 tons, was ordered from Arak Machine Manufacturing Company, adding that so far, 16 units have been delivered or installed, four are en route to Asalouyeh, and the production of four more units will be completed by the end of the year.

He highlighted Petrofarhang Holding’s pioneering efforts in producing national catalysts, stating that the methanol synthesis catalyst, which incurs significant foreign currency costs for each methanol production unit, was ordered domestically for the first time, achieving self-sufficiency in this product.

Zare’pour also mentioned that the acetylene hydrogenation catalyst, previously imported from other countries, is now being produced domestically for the first time through a joint effort by a knowledge-based company and Morvarid Petrochemical.

Also, ethylene oxide catalysts and industrial wastewater treatment packages used in Morvarid and Kimia petrochemical plants are being produced and implemented by other Iranian manufacturers, continuing the momentum towards national self-reliance, he said.

In relevant remarks in September, CEO of the National Petrochemical Company (NPC) Morteza Shahmirzayee had also announced that Iran’s petrochemical industry has gained independence and self-sufficiency in production of catalysts after 116 years.

Shahmirzayee made the remarks, addressing the opening ceremony of the 18th Iran Plast International Exhibition held in Tehran on September 8-11.

Before 1979, the country’s petrochemical sector with just five petrochemical plants was fully dependent on foreigners from designing to production, he said.

Shahmirzayee further said that Iran’s petrochemical sector owes 95 percent of its progress to after-revolution activities, adding the sector has taken great steps in the direction of domestic production of its technical know-how needs.
