Portugal Announces Plans to Double Public Housing Supply by 2030

TEHRAN (ANA)- The Portuguese government announced plans to more than double the country's public housing supply by 2030, setting a target of building 58,993 homes as part of its Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).

This ambitious goal, twice the original target of 26,000 homes, aims to address the nation's growing housing crisis, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing said.

The ministry said that the initial budget for the Housing Access Support Program under the PRR was insufficient to meet the real demand for housing in Portugal. Consequently, the government will increase funding for the initiative by an additional 2.8 billion euros (some 3.10 billion U.S.dollars). This brings the total investment to 2.011 million euros, to be financed by the state budget.

The new housing target aims to meet the needs of approximately 59,000 families who applied for support under the first Right Program. So far, 1,607 homes have been delivered, with efforts set to accelerate in the coming years in order to reach the new goal by 2030.

The government has repeatedly highlighted the need for swift and significant action to combat the ongoing housing shortage. The expanded plan is seen as a critical measure to tackle rising housing costs, and a lack of affordable housing across Portugal.

The Portuguese government is prioritizing housing reform as part of its broader strategy to address social inequality, and ensure access to adequate living conditions for all Portuguese citizens.
