Minister: Iran, Tajikistan’s Trade Exchanges Five-Folded in 3 Years

TEHRAN (ANA)- Iranian Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian announced that the trade exchanges between Iran and Tajikistan have increased fivefold in the past 3 years after the administration of the late Iranian President Seyed Ebrahim Rayeesi started work in August 2021.

The volume of trade between Iran and the regional countries, including Tajikistan increased in the administration of the late president, Mehrabian said in a meeting with Tajik Minister of Energy and Water Resources Daler Juma on the sidelines of the 4th meeting of the energy ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO)’s member states.

He said the trade exchanges between Iran and Tajikistan have five-folded.

Mehrabian also referred to the participation of Iranian companies in the advancement of the construction operation of the Rogun Dam in Tajikistan, and said the Iranian technical and engineering companies, benefiting from high technical know-how and experiences and also equipped with the most competent manpower, can play a leading role in advancing various hydroelectricity projects in Tajikistan.

Juma, for his part, emphasized the need for developing relations between the two countries in all areas.

He underlined that Tajikistan is ready to support the Iranian companies in the development projects in the country.

Earlier, in May, Iran and Tajikistan had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for strengthening of their bilateral transport and road relations.

The MoU was signed by Head of Iran Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization (RMTO) Dariush Amani and Deputy Transport Minister of Tajikistan Shayesta Moradzadeh in Tehran in late April, according to a report by the Iranian Roads and Urban Development Ministry's webiste.

Speaking during the signing ceremony of the agreement, Amani, who is also the deputy Roads and Urban Development Minister, pointed out that the President Ebrahim Raeisi administration has focused on expanding relations with the neighboring countries as a priority in its foreign policy.

He pointed to the strategic geographical location of Iran as a bridge connecting China and Central Asia with Western Asia and Europe, stressing that Iran's Southern ports have the potnetial to link Tajikistan’s territory to the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf as a suitable, safe and short route.

The Tajikistan’s deputy transport minister, for her part, thanked the Iranian side for hospitality and described the meeting as an exceptional opportunity to tap into the substantial potential shared between the two closely intertwined nations. She highlighted Tajikistan's central location in Central Asia, noting its historical role along the Silk Road as indicative of its untapped transportation capabilities in various transport fields.
