Iran-Made Dental Nanocomposite Prevents Tooth Decay

TEHRAN (ANA)- Iranian researchers at a knowledge-based company succeeded in producing and commercializing a dental composite which contains nanoparticles and is used to prevent tooth decay, specially in children.

“The product of our company is a dental composite in which nanoparticles are used. This composite also fills the groove of the tooth and due to the application of nanoparticles, it also helps to improve the strength of the tooth by releasing phosphate and calcium,” said Mohammad Mo’azzen, the chairman of the board of directors of the knowledge-based ‘Pishgaman Salamat Exir’ company.

Noting that tooth grooves, specially in children, are one of the vulnerable areas which are prone to decay, he said, “Of course, adults also have these grooves, but the depth of the grooves is bigger in children.”

“Resin materials only cover the surface of the groove, but these composites also penetrate deep into the groove and fill it. If these grooves are not filled, there is a possibility of food getting stuck in these grooves and tooth decay,” Mo’azzen said.

“At present, the production line of this dental composite has been launched and we produce approximately 10,000 syringes per year, and this product has been sold in the domestic market,” he stated.

Earlier, in January, a knowledge-based company in Iran had also succeeded in manufacturing nanocomposite dental cement based on zinc phosphate with high anti-corrosion and antibacterial properties for tooth restoration.

“Nanocomposites are the latest generation of dental composites that enjoy higher strength and resistance than other composites,” Nazanin Farhadyar, the managing-director of the knowledge-based ‘Nano Pouyesh Yekta Nano’ company, told ANA.

“Conventional non-nano zinc phosphate cements are not antibacterial and are less hard than other cements due to their low thickness, but the nano zinc phosphate composite made in our company has high anti-bacterial and anti-corrosion properties and is used as a dental cement for orthodontics, bridges and restoration,” she added.

Development and production of nano materials, different types of special and custom nano catalysts, nano absorbents, nano fibers, natural polymer nano capsules, and metal nano oxides, and holding specialized courses in the field of commercialization of nano products, start-up of new nano technologies and safety of nano materials are other activities of the knowledge-based company.
