TEHRAN (ANA)- Iranian engineers attained the technology for designing viscous fluid dampers, placing Iran among the nine countries holding the technology.

Viscous dampers (also known as seismic dampers) are hydraulic devices that dissipate the kinetic energy of seismic events and cushion the impact between structures.

They are versatile devices that can be designed to allow free movement as well as controlled damping of structures to protect them from wind load, thermal motion, or seismic events.

The experts achieved the technical knowledge of designing and manufacturing viscous fluid dampers, which can increase the resilience of structures against dynamic loads in addition to saving human lives during earthquakes.

The tests related to this system have been carried out at the International Research Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering.

Iran is one of the 10 earthquake-prone countries in the world, and one of the new methods to prevent destruction and loss of life during an earthquake is the use of viscous damper technology.

The product consists of alloy steel, polymer parts, as well as oils that are used with a special combination.

Its use in structures such as residential and public buildings, and bridges makes these structures protected against vibrations caused by any dynamic load such as earthquakes, wind, explosions, and shocks and prevents the structures from being depreciated.

The use of viscous dampers in structures under design and construction reduces the weight of the structure, but its use in existing structures improves their performance during earthquakes.

The seismic function of the main components of the structure such as columns and also non-structural components such as peripheral walls and facades is improved during an earthquake.

The structures are currently designed in such a way that they do not collapse in the face of the earthquake, but this system helps the structure to maintain resilience against the earthquake and the structure can be used after the earthquake.
