Iran Warns Prejudged Talks with U.S. Will Fail, Signals Diplomatic Persistence
Speaking at his weekly press briefing in Tehran on Monday, Baqaei responded to U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff’s recent remarks suggesting that President Donald Trump is puzzled over Iran’s refusal to “capitulate” on its nuclear program despite U.S. military buildup near Iranian borders.
“This is not the first time we have encountered contradictory claims,” Baqaei said. “We leave the judgment to the discerning people of Iran and the country’s political elites regarding our negotiating approach and that of the United States. No negotiation that begins with an imposed burden or pre-judgment will naturally produce results.”
Iran’s Clear Positions and Diplomatic Intentions
Baqaei underscored that Iran’s stance on nuclear matters and sanctions relief is clear, and that the country fully understands the U.S. position. He added that any successful negotiation requires joint action, seriousness, and goodwill from both sides.
“While formulating its approach, Iran hopes to hold a new round of talks with the United States in the coming days,” he said.
Commitment to Diplomacy and National Interests
Highlighting Iran’s confidence in the legitimacy of its positions — legally, logically, and in terms of international obligations — Baqaei emphasized that Tehran remains committed to pursuing diplomacy as long as there is a realistic chance of tangible outcomes.
“Our diplomatic path is serious and steadfast, reflecting the belief in the justness of our positions and the potential to achieve meaningful results,” he concluded.
