Iranian Researchers Find Way to Create Value Chain for Butadiene

TEHRAN (ANA)- A group of researchers at an Iranian knowledge-based company managed to find a way for creating a value chain for butadiene - the raw material for many petrochemicals.

The main applications of butadiene are synthetic rubber, widely used in producing shoe soles, tires, and other parts for the car industry, adhesives and sealants, asphalt and polymer modification, and compounds for endless purposes.

It is also the basis for nylon and resins, electrical appliance shells, and telephones, among others.

Butadiene has so far been supplied to the market in the form of raw material, but the researchers created a value chain utilizing the indigenized technology.

Many industries depend on butane and butadiene gases, Farshad Matbou, the managing director of the company, said.

“Due to the importance of the oil, petrochemicals, gas, and refining industries, we started the activity in this field and have thus far been able to direct emerging technologies toward production in various sectors,” he added.

Despite the fact that butane and butadiene are produced in abundance in the country, they are often sold in raw form, Matbou said.

Butylene and butadiene, along with ethylene and propylene, are among the seven basic materials of the petrochemical industry.

“We finalized the process of obtaining the license and certificate for butadiene by-products, and with the completion of this process, Iran will be one of the eight countries holding the license,” he concluded.
