Iran’s parliament speaker frames financial arena as key battleground with US

(Tehran Ana)- Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said financial warfare is the primary front in confronting the United States, stressing economic resilience as a tool to counter Washington’s influence.

In a post on X early Saturday, Ghalibaf referred to recent remarks by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent about activating currency-swap arrangements aimed at preventing what US officials described as disorderly sales of American assets.

He argued that such measures effectively limit the ability of some investors to offload US holdings, suggesting that certain institutional holders face implicit caps on sales. According to Ghalibaf, this reflects underlying sensitivities in the US financial system, particularly regarding large-scale bond sell-offs.

He added that under worsening market conditions, these constraints could tighten further, restricting liquidity for major investors. Ghalibaf also warned bondholders, saying the situation signals broader concerns about market stability.
The speaker framed the issue as part of a wider financial confrontation, pointing to the US bond market and yield curve as a central front in geopolitical competition.

His remarks come amid heightened tensions following the outbreak of a US-Israeli conflict with Iran on February 28. In response, Tehran closed the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route, a move that has had significant repercussions for the global economy and added pressure on US economic stability.
