The rebound was driven by a recovery from the significant decline caused by automaker Daihatsu's certification fraud scandal, according to data from the Japan Automobile Dealers Association and the Japan Light Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Association.

Daihatsu saw a remarkable increase from the previous year, selling 41,374 units, following the resumption of production at all its domestic factories in May 2024 after the scandal-induced suspension in late 2023.

Toyota also performed strongly, posting a 32 percent increase to 127,105 units. Subaru and Mazda saw notable gains of 45 percent and 28 percent, respectively, while Honda recorded a slight increase, selling 57,394 units.

However, Nissan's sales fell 13 percent to 41,224 units, while Mitsubishi declined 7 percent to 10,340 units.
