Researchers in Southeastern Iran Produce Water Desalination Device

TEHRAN (ANA)- A knowledge-based company in Sistan and Balouchestan province has been able to manufacture a desalination device that converts salty water into fresh water with the help of solar energy.

“Our products which can help the settlement of water shortage problem in Sistan and Balouchestan province (in Southeastern Iran) is the solar water desalination device,” said Mohammad Moqaddam, the head of the board of directors of the knowledge-based company stationed at Sistan and Balouchestan’s Science and Technology Park.

“The device can purify water and it turns the saltiest waters like sea water or any kind of polluted water into fresh water and even removes the microbial contamination of these waters. In addition, it does not have any special complications and does not need to be repaired for a long time. Meantime, due to the small space it occupies (half a square meter), it can be easily used and installed in all spaces,” he explained.

Moqaddam added that the Iran-made solar water desalination device produces less wastewater than imported samples, noting that the imported water desalination devices produce 4 liters of wastewater to produce one liter of fresh water which causes damage to the environment and increases the level of salty surface waters while in the Iranian model all salty water is purified and no effluent remains.

Desalination is the process by which the dissolved mineral salts in water are removed. Currently, this process, applied to seawater, is one of the most used to obtain fresh water for human consumption or agricultural purposes.

Desalination is currently expensive compared to most alternative sources of water, and only a very small fraction of total human use is satisfied by desalination. It is usually only economically practical for high-valued uses (such as household and industrial uses) in arid areas.
