Iranian Experts Design, Construct Heavy Drilling Rigs with 3,000 Horsepower
“At present, the technical know-how of designing and manufacturing heavy drilling rigs up to 3,000 horsepower with the latest design of the drilling rig structure according to the API standard has been transferred and indigenized by the Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research,” Waliollah Roshan told ANA.
He noted that the first drilling rig (Fath 71) was built, installed and commissioned in Ahvaz operational area and operational tests were conducted on it to start drilling operations 12 years ago.

“The rig 73 is a skid type and has a power of 2,000 horsepower, and the share of internal power in its construction was more than 50%,” he added.
Roshan underlined that the structure of the mast along with the electrical system, control and top drive are among the main equipment of this mast, which are built, assembled and commissioned in Iran.
In a relevant development in February, Iranian experts at a knowledge-based company had made it possible to increase productivity in low-yield and l0w-efficiency oil wells in the country by designing and producing strategic equipment in the field of drilling.

Behnam Khodayar, the managing director of the knowledge-based company pointed to the construction of the whipstock machine for use in the drilling industry, specifically in the oil field and said, “Whipstock is a strategic tool in the drilling industry, and we have taken steps to produce a whipstock with new technology and according to domestic needs using local know-how and after conducting serious research and development work.”
The director of the company said that the most important advantage of their product is the use of completely domestic know-how, adding, “Other companies’ products manufactured in Iran are fully copied from foreign-made equivalents and produced through reverse engineering method. Such products cannot be exported. But our product is the only domestically-produced machine that is based on an Iranian design and has export potential and it has already been commercialized.”
“The products of this knowledge-based company are made in hydraulic and mechanical models in different sizes and with an exclusive design, in the meantime, the operational power of these products is in line with the equivalents machines made in the western countries,” he added.
