Five new power plant units were inaugurated by Iranian President Seyed Ebrahim Rayeesi to increase the country’s energy security and meet demands.

The projects included a 366-GW thermal power plant located 82 kilometers to the West of the city of Zanjan. Aryan power plant will be the largest in Northwestern Iran and will create a total of 240 new jobs in the region.

Other projects opened by Rayeesi were two 180 GW and two 160 GW power plant units located in Northwest, Northeast and in Southern Iran.

The new power plants will bring Iran’s total electricity generation capacity to 89.365 GW. A breakdown of the figure showed thermal power plants accounted for some 72.614 GW of the capacity, while total capacity at Iranian hydroelectric stations was at about 12.087 GW.

Renewables and small generators account for 3.644 GW of Iran’s electricity generation mix while one single nuclear power plant located in the Southern part of the country has a generation capacity of 1.02 GW.

Advisor to Iran’s Energy Minister for international affairs said in September that the country is the top electricity producer in the region.

Thanks to the exchange of electrical energy with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) members states, Iran’s electricity production power will increase, Mohammad Ali Farahnakian said.

Iran, India, and Russia are among the largest and most powerful electricity producers in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and Iran is among the few countries that have big fossil fuel capacity as well, he added.

Due to its geolocation, Iran is connected to important markets which need electricity, such as Iraq with a 10,000 MW deficit and Pakistan with 7,000 MW deficit, which is a good advantage for all SCO member states, Farahnakian said.
