The International Union of Railways (UIC) recently held the 6th best ideas competition in the field of IT and a group Iranian researchers consisting of Morteza Baqeri, a faculty member of the Faculty of Railway Engineering, Kimia Esmayeelzadeh, a BS student in the field of rail transportation engineering, and members of the ‘transportation and logistics systems laboratory’ of the Faculty of Railway Engineering were able to grab the first place in this competition in the safety sector.

This is the second time that members of this laboratory win the prize and they had taken the first place in the safety sector during the first round of the competition in 2006.

As one of the infrastructure industries, the rail transport industry has a special role in the indicators of development and economy of countries.

The Faculty of Railway Engineering of Iran University of Science and Technology was established as the only Faculty of Railway Engineering in the Middle East in line with the development of the know-how and technology in this field and based on the demand and comprehensive support of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways.

Railways provide a safe and sustainable form of transport worldwide. Whilst the actual level of safety achieved can vary widely, even within economically developed areas such as the European Union, railways are typically amongst the safest form of transport. Inevitably, this level of safety comes with an associated cost and balancing safety, performance and cost is one of the key global challenges for the railway industry.

Various approaches are adopted to ensure that investment in safety is proportionate to the safety benefit.

Maintaining and improving safety in the railway industry requires the expertise of many professional disciplines including, engineers, operators, safety managers and human factors experts.
