Iranian Researchers Design, Produce Rangefinder Cameras
In an interview with local Iranian media, Mohammadreza Sardarinejad, one of the researchers of the project to produce the rangefinder cameras said, “Our products are divided in two classes: solid state lasers and fiber lasers: fiber lasers are used for cutting metal, steel and iron, and solid state lasers are used for measuring distance.”
Solid state lasers have a lower beam quality than fiber lasers, but they can produce higher peak power and shorter pulses. Solid state lasers can also operate in CW or pulsed modes, but they require more cooling and maintenance than fiber lasers.
“With these solid state lasers, we can measure ranges from 3 to 15 kilometers away,” he went on to say.
Sardarinejad point to the design and manufacture of cameras based on solid state lasers and added, “This camera is a thermal and range-finding module and is able to detect animals and individuals at a distance of up to 3 kilometers according its visual range.”
“Living things such as humans and animals emit thermal infrared waves which can be displayed on this camera,” he added.
Stating that the camera displays other objects as shadows and living objects as white, he noted, “In addition to the thermal module, this camera has a range finder module. If an object enters the image and we want to know how far it is from the camera, we can determine the range between the object and ourselves through a laser pulse.”
“This camera can be used to maintain security in different sites including border guarding, in the meantime, it can be used for environmental and wildlife monitoring,” he added.
