Iranian Knowledge-Based Company Produces Devices for People with Disabilities

TEHRAN (ANA)- A group of researchers at a knowledge-based firm in Iran have offered a device equipped with artificial intelligence to strengthen the muscles of the hands and legs to assist the people with disabilities with their natural hand and legs movements.

In an interview with Iranian media, Parsa Ahmadi, one of the researchers in a company pointed to the quadriceps or hamstrings device as one of the knowledge-based achievements of the company.

He said that the thigh and hamstring support assists patients to stretch the hamstring, calf, glutes, knee and lower back.

He called the latest product of their company a device for improving hand movement which is an artificial intelligence glove.

“Patients with hand problems, especially patients who have suffered from a stroke, can use this device to help them with their fingers and hands movement,” he said.

“The mirror gloves are worn on the healthy hand and imitate the movement of the healthy hand for the injured hand….The brain neurons are activated and help patients move their hands,” Ahmadi said.

This glove can drive the users to grasp various virtual objects while the users can visualize their grasping in a virtual environment. This glove has two main functions: actuation-assisted rehabilitation and real-time gesture recognition.

He said that the third device they have made in their company is incontinence assistance device to help the patients with their voluntary control over their urination.

According to the researcher, the leg braces are among other data-x-items produced in their company. He said that the device is for people with foot drop and spasticity conditions.

Spasticity is a condition in which muscles stiffen or tighten, preventing normal fluid movement. The muscles remain contracted and resist being stretched, thus affecting movement, speech and gait.

Meanwhile, Spasticity is abnormal muscle tightness due to prolonged muscle contraction. It is a symptom associated with damage to the brain, spinal cord or motor nerves, and is seen in individuals with neurological conditions.

“This device is a non-invasive functional electrical stimulation system that is tied under the knee of the patients and in this way the device imitates the nerves of the leg and activates the muscles,” he said.

 "Gamiar" is the name of the product which means step assistant. Advanced sensors imitate the movement of the body and when needed, the patient raises the ankles and toes to walk more naturally and with less energy.”

According to him, this system is adjusted with the help of mobile phone software and provides an evaluation of movement to the patient.
