Considering the conditions of the region, this year's conference will mainly focus on finding and implementing of solutions for the restoration of lakes and water ecosystems, specially the Lake Urmia.
The main goal of the conference is to improve the quality and practicality of research and its results.
Presenting the latest achievements in the field of hydraulic engineering, reviewing and providing practical solutions for the needs of the country's water industry, paying attention to sustainable development indicators and examining water and environmental issues are other goals pursued by participants in the 22nd Hydraulic Conference in Iran.
Lake Urmia in the Northwestern part of Iran is the largest lake in the Middle East. It covers an area that varies from 2,000 to 2,300 square miles (5,200 to 6,000 square km). Like the Dead Sea, it is remarkable for the extreme salinity of its waters. Since 1967 it has enjoyed the status of a wetland protected region, and efforts have been made to increase its wildlife.
Lake Urmia, located between East and West Azerbaijan provinces, began drying up in the mid 2000s. According to international statistics, the lake had lost about 80% of its waterbed by 2015.
