Iranian Experts Complete Butane Extraction Project in 2nd Refinery of South Pars
The project was launched during the recent trip of Deputy Oil Minister for Gas Affairs Majid Chegini to Assalouyeh and his visit to the South Pars Gas Company.
“Based on the initial planning, the project was supposed to be completed within a period of two years, but with the efforts of our colleagues in the refinery, the time needed from the study phase to implementation phase was reduced to one year,” said Hossein Baqban, the manager of the second refinery of the South Pars Gas Company.
Elaborating on benefits of implementing the project for Iran, he noted, “In addition to the achievements of the project, like preventing the annual waste of 168,000 tons of butane, it brings nearly $100 million of foreign currency income to the country.”
SPGC is operating several gas refineries in Southern Iran that are currently processing the gas extracted from the country’s giant South Pars gas field which Iran shares with Qatar in the Persian Gulf.
South Pars is currently divided into 24 standard phases on the Iranian side and is estimated to contain a significant amount of natural gas, accounting for about eight percent of the world’s reserves, and approximately 18 billion barrels of condensate.
The mentioned gas field covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which, called South Pars, are in Iran’s territorial waters. The remaining 6,000 square kilometers, called North Dome, are situated in Qatar’s territorial waters.
