Hossein Simaei-Sarraf, Iran’s minister of science, research and technology, announced the plan on Tuesday. He made the remarks while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a ceremony at the University of Science and Technology.

“God willing, the University of Tehran’s branch will soon begin operating in Iraq with 14 academic programs,” he said, according to Press TV. He confirmed that the Iraqi government had approved the initiative.

Simaei-Sarraf highlighted the role of international academic and cultural exchanges in promoting peace, ethics and tolerance. He said cross-border educational cooperation allows countries to learn from one another and share knowledge and experience.

“Through this process, we learn from students and countries around the world while also sharing our own knowledge and experience with them,” he said.

The minister also expressed hope that academic cooperation between Iran and other countries would continue to expand.

Meanwhile, Iraq’s ambassador to Iran, Yasser Abdul-Zahra al-Hajjaj, confirmed that the Iraqi government had approved the establishment of a University of Tehran branch in Najaf. He made the announcement at the same ceremony.

Al-Hajjaj also voiced hope that branches of Sharif University of Technology and Iran University of Science and Technology would be established in Iraq in the future.

He stressed the potential for expanding technological cooperation through closer ties between technology organizations. He said collaboration should move beyond exchanging experiences and lead to the implementation of joint projects.

“The Republic of Iraq is ready to develop its scientific relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran on the basis of shared interests and forward-looking academic cooperation,” he said.
