UNESCO Votes to Int’l Inscription of Iran's Tabas Geopark
“Tabas geopark, after the Qeshm and Aras international geoparks, gained the positive vote of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council, and thus will be internationally registered as Iran's 3rd geopark next spring," said Deputy Head of the National Geological and Mines Discovery Organization for Research and Geological Heritage Nazanin Badri.
The file for Tabas Geopark membership was requested in November 2021, she said, adding that the development happened after five years of initial activities and the executive phases of preparing the preservation infrastructures and their descriptive narration in the Local Academic Geo-Site.
Badri said that two international inspectors dispatched by the UNESCO, made the final visit of the geo-site in Tabas in August 2022, noting, "The Tabas Geopark gained the unanimous vote of all members and the UNESCO green card for membership in International Geoparks Network at the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council session, held on December 8th, 2022. But the international registration of this 3rd internationally registered geo-park of Iran will happen next spring after the confirmation of the UNESCO Executive Council.”
Lying in the Eastern province of South Khorasan, Tabas Geopark includes about 50 geo-sites, scenic landscapes, and untouched terrains with the mysterious Kal-e Jeni (canyon of Jinni) located in Azmighan Village, amongst them.
Situated in a vast county of the same name, Tabas Geopark has an enormous potential to be registered as ‘the biggest’ geopark in West Asia.
