Iran Ranks 1st in Islamic World in Scientific Production of 4D Printing Technology

TEHRAN (ANA)- Iran has gained the second and first place among the Muslim states in scientific production of 3D and 4D printing technologies, respectively, said Ali Nayebi, the vice-president of technology and innovation of the Islamic World Science and Technology Monitoring and Citation Institute (ISC).

“Iran has a relatively good ranking in 4D printing. Iran has taken the 11th place in the world in this technology and is ranked 22nd among the countries in the world in 3D printing,” Nayebi said.

“Also, based on the data extracted from the Web of Science database, in the field of 3D printing technology, Turkey with 779 certificates, the Islamic Republic of Iran with 606 certificates, and Malaysia with 543 certificates are ranked first to third, respectively,” he added.

“Meantime, in the field of 4D printing technology, Iran is ranked first with 65 certificates, Malaysia is ranked second with 20 certificates, and Egypt is ranked third with 14 certificates,” Nayebi noted.

Iranian companies have made good progress in production of 3d printers and products.

In a relevant development in October, Iranian researchers at a knowledge-based company had succeeded in indigenizing a metal 3D printer which can be used by other domestic firms for molding.

“We produced a metal 3D printer. This device is custom-made, and its price ranges from 350,000 Euros to 3 million Euros if produced by foreign companies, but this technology has been indigenized in our country and is available at a much less price than the foreign model,” Barzin Qaffari, the managing director of the knowledge-based company, told ANA.

“At the beginning of the work, we faced the challenge of building a robot and manufactured it with many trials and errors, and then we prepared the software systems,” he added.

“There are 13 types of metal printing methods in the world, of which we have developed 2 methods of metal powder and metal wire,” Qaffari said.

Noting that at present Iran is known as one of the countries making this technological product in the world and has reached the mass production stage, he explained, “Metal 3D printers in the market work with metal powder while the metal powder fuses together and the part is made.”
