Iran-Made Polyaluminum Chloride Removes Suspended Particles, Water Turbidity

TEHRAN (ANA)- Iranian researchers at a knowledge-based company succeeded in production of producing polyaluminum chloride which is used as a coagulant in the water and wastewater treatment process (industrial and urban) to remove suspended particles and water turbidity.

“Polyaluminum chloride is a relatively new chemical that is produced in liquid and solid forms in two grades of yellow (high basicity) and white (low basicity), and is widely used as a coagulant in the water and wastewater treatment process (industrial and urban) to remove suspended particles and water turbidity,” said Hossein Shevidi, the managing director of the knowledge-based company.

"This product replaces other older coagulants like aluminum sulfate and ferric chloride, which has many competitive advantages, including higher efficiency, reduced chemical consumption in the treatment process, reduced sludge volume, effective performance in a wider pH range, and consequently reduced unit costs for the treatment plants," he added.

"Liquid polyaluminum chloride, as an output product from reactors producing this material, presents many challenges in transportation and storage due to its low pH and corrosive nature. This not only significantly increases transportation costs, but also makes exporting this product in liquid form practically impossible due to logistical and safety constraints," Shevidi said.

Polyaluminum chloride (PAC) is highly effective coagulant for water treatment over conventional coagulants because of low dosage requirement, shorter flocculation time, smaller amount of sludge, high efficiency and low aluminum residual in treated water.

PAC is more efficient than aluminum sulfate for different initial raw water turbidity and coagulant dosages. PAC also works at all turbidity levels. The consumption of PAC is much lower than aluminum sulfate and hence the treatment cost gets reduced. PAC also causes minimum drop in pH and the need of lime for neutralization can be minimized.
