Official: Transit of Goods via Iran Up 37% in 10-Month Period

TEHRAN (ANA)- Head of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) Ali Akbar Safayee announced 37% increase in the transit of goods via the Iranian territory in the first 10 months of the current Persian calendar year (started March 20).

“During this period, we had 2,225,000 TEUs of container operations, an 11% growth, nearly 172 million tons of loading and unloading operations, a 3% growth in non-oil goods, and 9,400,000 tons of transit performance, which shows a 37% growth compared to the same period last year,” Safayee said.

“We also have 48 vessels under construction, 125 vessels and port equipment under repair,” he added.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) announced in May that the transit of goods via Iran had increased by 56.5% in the first two months of the current Persian calendar year.

The IRICA added that over 3.6 million tons of goods were transited through Iran in the first two months of the Iranian calendar year, showing a 56.5% hike compared to the same period last year. 

Parvizkhan customs on Iran’s western borders with the Iraqi Kurdistan Region ranked first by registering 1.07 million tons of commodities in the two-month period, which accounted for 29.5% of the foreign transit.

Shahid Rajayee customs in the southern parts of the country recorded the second-largest foreign transit in the period, registering 893,000 tons of goods.

Also, 474,000 million tons of the commodities went through Bashmaq customs which connects Iran to Iraq, coming third in this regard.

During this period, the largest increase in foreign transit went to the customs of Piranshahr, Sarakhs, and Parvizkhan, marking a rise of 726%, 294%, and 238%, respectively.

Figures released by the IRICA for the first month of the Iranian year had indicated that the country’s foreign trade (total exports and imports), increased by 47.63% compared to same period last year.

 “The country's foreign trade (total exports and imports), including crude oil, gas condensate, technical engineering and electricity services, increased by 47.63% to $10,420,000 in the month of Farvardin this year (March 19-April 20, 2024),” IRICA said in a report.

“Of the total exports and imports of the country, $7,680,000,000 were exports and $2,740,000,000 imports,” the report added.
