Young Iranian Inventor Awarded for Seismic Damper by IFIA

TEHRAN (ANA) – Young Iranian inventor Arsalan Anwari who received an international award for inventing a new seismic damper told ANA that if his invention is sponsored, it can make Iran an exporter of the device and that will create a lot of income for the country.

Speaking to ANA correspondent, Arslan Anwari, the inventor of seismic damper, said that he was born in 1991 and has a Ph.D. student in Civil Engineering, from Tehran’s Islamic Azad University, Science and Research branch.

He said he received a gold medal from the Swiss-based International Federation of Inventors Associations (IFIA) in the field of civil engineering after presenting the invention.

The young inventor said that his invention is dubbed “earthquake mechatronic controller with three-phase damper in two-layer foundations” that could win the gold medal of the second IFIA conference in Geneva, Switzerland 2022.

He told ANA that the invention of "mechatronic seismic damper" is actually a type of damper or dissipater of the quake shockwaves on building, especially tall buildings.

Anwari said that his damper uses three liquid, solid and gas phases for greater efficiency. “In this damper, in addition to the rigid metal part, which is responsible for the main task of transmitting pressure between the two layers of the foundation, two pneumatic mechanisms and liquid oil under pressure are used to reduce the quake shockwaves on the building. This system, similar to hydraulic or pneumatic shock absorbers, opens or closes during an earthquake according to the information it receives from processing of acceleration-sensitive sensors in the central processor.”

“Because it uses a compressed air system, it helps the columns not to go down by helping supporting settlements and reduce the possibility of creating cracks in the structure. In other words, one of the problems in tall buildings is the support settlements of various columns for various reasons, including ground settlement under the foundation, increase or decrease of the underground water level, etc. This issue is also one of the new initiatives of this plan, in this plan, by using protractor sensors in the foundation, if any of these cases occur, by reducing or increasing the amount of air pressure inside the pistons, each of the dampers will be lengthened or shortened as needed,” the inventor further explained.

In response to the question about any similar device in other countries, he explained, “Yes, in general, the use of dampers in structures and buildings has a relatively long history in this industry (construction) in both in the world and in Iran; it has already been used in the construction industry; but what is different about this invention is that its performance has been improved and its application and effectiveness have been increased.”

Anwari went on to say that his invention needs investment to develop first in Iran and then in the next stage on the international stage. He added that if it its gets to the foreign markets, it can create a lot of income for Iran.

He also said about the award he received and said that the international and specialized competition of inventors in Switzerland has a special place in the world, which is held every year under the direct supervision and support of the Swiss federal government and the mayor of Geneva, and with the support of the United Nations Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), IFIA, scientific organizations and Research and centers related to inventors and the ministries of science, education and research of more than 45 countries including France, Germany, Romania, Russia, Croatia, Malaysia, Hungary, Portugal, Holland, Spain, South Korea, Taiwan and Iran are held.

“The IFIA executive committee at the end of each year, based on the activities performed by the inventors globally, the inventors whose inventions include cases of innovation in invention, thoughtful action and benefit to humanity, are selected among the eligible people and given the title of Inventor (Inv) and IFIA membership, which is the most prominent title in the realm of inventions in the world,” he added.

Anwari concluded that Iran with its vast number of colleges and universities and the students has a lot to say in the world of inventions, urging the young Iranian inventors to present their ideas to the world.
