Iran Ranks 3rd in World in Production of Pomegranate
“India with three million tons and China with 1.69 million tons are higher than Iran with nearly 1.3 million tons of pomegranate production,” Boroumandi said.
“Last year, 36,949 tons of pomegranate worth over $17,000 were exported to different countries,” he added.
At present, orchards are the most important center of production of agricultural products for export in Iran, and horticulture is the most central sector in the country’s agricultural export.
Therefore, the implementation of the orchard reform plan of the Agriculture Ministry, which is effective in the quality of production and the increase of gardeners’ income, plays a noticeable part in the export of garden products.
In this due, the development of horticulture, improvement of gardens, development of dense cultivation to increase yield per unit area, use of modern irrigation systems, use of canopy to reduce risks in the horticulture sector, and increase the quality of produced products are among the most important programs in progress in the field of horticulture in the country.
Iran is the largest producer of garden products in the region, according to the chairman of the Iran Fruit Union.
Referring to the necessity of adopting a policy to increase exports, Reza Nourani said, “Given the country's high capacities, we are the first in the region in the production of agricultural and horticultural products”.
Mentioning the country’s high potential in the production of agricultural products, he stated: “Iran is a country suffering from water scarcity, and we have gone through several consecutive years of drought, however, we have the first place in the production of agricultural products in the region.”
