South Korea's Gender Pay Gap Falls below 30 Percent in 2023
A per-capita annual wage for men, employed by 2,647 companies subject to disclosure, averaged 98.57 million won in 2023, up 13.6 percent from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.
The annual average wage for women working at the companies advanced 20.6 percent to 72.59 million won last year.
The wage gap between men and women narrowed to 26.3 percent in 2023 from 30.7 percent in the previous year, sliding below 30 percent for the first time since relevant data began to be compiled in 2019.
The ratio of women to the total employees at the companies gained 1.1 percentage points to 27.7 percent in 2023 compared to the previous year.
The average tenure for women at the companies grew from 8.9 years in 2022 to 9.1 years in 2023, while the tenure for men was unchanged at 11.9 years last year.
In 339 public institutions, the per-capital annual average wage for men stood at 78.49 million won in 2023, higher than 60.74 million won for women.
The gender pay gap in the institutions slipped to 22.7 percent in 2023 from 25.2 percent in the prior year.
