IAU Student Becomes Only Iranian Kurash Athlete Winning Gold Medal at Asian Championships

TEHRAN (ANA)- An official with the Islamic Azad University (IAU), Bojnurd branch in the Northeastern part of Iran said that a student of that IAU branch was the only Iranian player who won a gold medal in the recent Kurash Asian competition.

The 13th edition of Asian Senior Kurash Championship was recently held in Iranian capital Tehran.

“In the 13th edition of the Kurash Asian Championship, Elias Pakdel, a master's degree student in sports physiology at IAU Bojnurd branch, won the only gold medal for Iran in this edition of the competition at the weight of 73 kg,” said Javad Abdi, the vice president for student and cultural affairs of IAU, Bojnurd branch.

To gain the gold medal, Pakdel at the -73 kilogram, first defeated a Taiwanese opponent to advance to the next stage, then a Chinese rival to advance to the semifinal.

In the semi-final stage, the IAU practitioner defeated his Indian opponent commandingly and in the final, he beat his powerful Uzbek rival to bag the gold medal.

Abdi said that Pakdel had also won the gold medal of the previous edition of the Asian tournament as well as the gold of last year's world championship.

The Iranian national Kurash team won one gold medal, five silver medals and one bronze medal and became the vice-champion after Uzbekistan.
