“Last year, at the meeting of the World Meteorological Organization Region 2 (Asia) Union, the initial permission to establish the Regional Climate Center of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in Tehran was issued as the first regional climate center of West Asia,” head of the Iran’s Meteorological Organization told reported on the sidelines of a conference in Tehran.

She added that the permission was issued by the WMO after going through the procedures and it has now entered the practical stage.

Currently, the National Climate Center of the IMO and the technical department of the organization are completing the process of creating an internet portal of the West Asia regional climate center and as soon as it is prepared, the relevant information will be sent to the WMO for final assessment, she further said.

“When the final permit is issued, this will be the second international center of the country's meteorological organization to be established in the last 64 years,” Tajbakhsh added.

“There are significant infrastructural and scientific facilities in the Iran Meteorological Organization and the National Climate Center of the organization, which can provide services at a regional level,” the top Iranian metrological official said.

“In 2019, for the first time in the region, a decadal prediction was produced in conformity with the WMO standards and protocols at the Climatology Research Institute of the National Meteorological Organization,” Tajbakhsh continued.

“Moreover, seasonal and sub-seasonal models have been implemented in IMO at regional levels for many years, and all these issues confirm the existence of scientific and infrastructural capabilities in that regard in our country,” the IMO chairwoman added.

She added that after the launch of West Asia RCC in Tehran, various climate services, including seasonal, sub-seasonal and decadal monitoring and forecasts, along with related trainings will be offered to the West Asian countries.

She continued to conclude that the RCCs have so far been set up in China, Japan, South Korea, and India.
