Iranian Technologists Use Temporary Masts to Enhance Resilience of Power Grid

TEHRAN (ANA)- Technologists at the Niroo Research Institute (NRI) have carried out an innovative project to enhance the resilience of the electricity grid using temporary masts instead of permanent ones.

“It reduces the costs and time-consuming process of the executive operation to restore the damaged lines and allows for temporary power supply to certain areas” said Alireza Rahnavard, the director of the Research Group of Transmission Structures at the Niroo Research Institute (NRI) which is part of the Iranian Ministry of Energy.

“When permanent masts in transmission lines are damaged partially or completely as a result of special weather conditions such as storms and blizzards or other destructive environmental conditions, this portable temporary mast system is erected and replaced in the shortest possible time at the installation site,” he said.

“The power outage time in the case of replacing a damaged permanent main mast system takes 7 to 15 days depending on the conditions of the area, while the power outage time to restore the line using a temporary mast is estimated to be between 24 and 72 hours,” NRI researcher said.

He further noted that replacing the permanent masts is much costlier than the temporary ones.

Rahnavard noted that they used temporary masts during a power outage in Mazandaran Province in 2021 to restore the line, which proved to be really effective.
