Iran Stands in 15th Place in Artificial Intelligence Articles Worldwide
In the seminar "Artificial Intelligence and its Applications in Higher Education" held at the University of Tehran, Chairman of Information Technology Organization of Iran (ITO) Mohammad Khansari explained the national and global policies in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and how to regulate AI.
“Currently, Iran ranks 15th in the world in terms of articles in the field of artificial intelligence, but in terms of technology application, we still have a significant gap and we must make intensify efforts to fill that gap,” added the ITO head, who is also Iran’s deputy minister of Information and Communications Technology(ICT).
As regards challenges and regulations to tackle them in the realm of AI in the world, Khansari said, “Under these circumstances, different countries in the world have disproportionately benefited from artificial intelligence, while using personal information of users has greatly affected the security and privacy of people. Another challenge is the AI impact on the labor market. So that automation and robotics can greatly affect the job market for lots of people. The spread and expansion of non-cash financial transactions and the use of cryptocurrencies can create new challenges from a financial and security perspective in dealing with AI.”
He considered privacy, health and security, ethics, collaborative approaches, equality and social justice, economy and workforce as challenging issues when it comes to regulating AI, adding, “With proper legislation, the risks from using AI can be reduced in the world as a look at the pieces of legislations in different countries benefiting from AI indicates.”
He stated that the AI rapid progress has surpassed the current governance levels in developing countries, adding, “The improper use of AI and lack of regulations to accelerate development and prevent the risks originating from it, can destroy the economy of the countries that are still behind in that regard. It can destabilize those countries and undermine their government’s control over their culture, politics; Therefore, with proper policy-making and governance, the deep backwardness in dealing with knowledge and technology can be prevented.”
