“The purpose of this project is to make knowledge-based products in the field of biological sciences and other areas, including environment, recycling industry, nutrition industry, etc.,” Amin Mahmoudinia, the head of the board of directors of the holding company, told ANA.

Noting that the project named ‘Industrial insect breeding for recycling urban and industrial waste’ is one of the most practical technological projects of the company in the recycling industry, he said, “This product is the result of investment and production of several knowledge-based companies and is specific to wet waste.”

“Garbage and wet waste with a partial processing are fed to insects or (black) soldier flies (BSF).These insects are primarily feed for livestock and poultry. At the same time, due to their high protein content, they are a suitable alternative for industrial soybean production,” Mahmoudinia said.

He also stated that the shells and excrement of these insects are used in the pharmaceutical industry in certain European states.

Using insects to process and recycle organic waste is a clean and circular solution, but progressing this option is challenging due to a lack of knowledge about circular economies coupled with regulations that encumber the implementation of sustainable waste processing.

The black soldier fly (BSF) converts food waste into useful proteins and other high demand products, such as organic fertilizer that can be used in cities, parks and green spaces.
