Iranian Academics Manufacture Traction Motor for Cargo, Passenger Trains
“These motors are very much needed to modernize the railway transportation fleet of our country,” said Hassan Moslemi Nayeeni, the president of the Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research, addressing a ceremony to unveil the motor.
Also, Farshid Nejati, the director of the specialized center of electrical and pressure machines of the Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research of Khajeh Nasir Toosi University of Technology, said that oil and gas fields, rail and repair and reconstruction of special electric cars are the main activities of this center.
Referring to construction of the D78 traction motor at the specialized center of electric and high-pressure machines of Khajeh Nasir Toosi University of Technology, he said, “Motor tractions are divided into two general categories for intercity trains and railways, and urban and subway trains.”
Nejati said that the D78 motors are the upgraded form of D77 motors, adding, “Each locomotive of intercity trains needs 6 of these traction motors.”
In a relevant development in January, a knowledge-based company in Iran had also succeeded in designing a system based on artificial intelligence that prevents trains from colliding or hitting barriers on the railroad.
“Our product is a system to prevent trains from colliding or hitting obstacles. It detects barriers on the train's path based on artificial intelligence by using information and modern technologies,” said Emad Oqabi, the managing director of a knowledge-based company and a member of the electrical department of the Islamic Azad University’s Mashhad branch.
“This system uses the best braking mode based on the obstacle’s distance in a way that the train stops with the minimum shock and the trains do not collide with each other or hit possible obstacles,” he added.
Noting that his company has used the technology that Tesla Motors uses for its self-driving cars, Oqabi said, “A number of trains in Mashhad city (in Northeastern Iran) have been equipped with this system.”
“This knowledge-based product has no foreign sample and it has gone through field tests for nearly two years and been approved by the authorities,” he stated.
