Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji, accompanied by Managing Director of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) Mohsen Khojastehmehr, inaugurated several projects during his one-day visit to Khuzestan province in the Southwestern part of Iran.

During the trip, he issued an order via videoconference for exploiting 60 new wells.

The South Azadegan field is located 80 kilometers West of Ahvaz, the capital city of Khuzestan Province, and shared with Iraq.

The joint field has 203 wells, two collection units in the south and the north, and one Central Treatment Export Plant (CTEP).

Of the 203 wells, 163 have been drilled for boosting the field’s output and 60 new ones have been interconnected.

Following the increase in the field’s production, its M Northern separation unit was launched and now 25,000 barrels of oil are transferred from the South Azadegan field to the desalination unit.

After a years-long hiatus, the development of South Azadegan resumed after President Ebrahim Rayeesi’s administration took office.

Since autumn 2021, the first phase of development has been accelerated to make up for lost time by relying on expertise of domestic manufacturers and contractors and their experience in developing oil and gas fields and investing some 400 million dollars.

To that end, drilling facilities were increased by 70 percent, 170-kilometer-long flow pipelines were supplied, of which 130 kilometers were installed and launched, 40 new wells were drilled, completed, and put into operation, daily crude oil output rose by 45,000 barrels, 130 kilometers of major and minor access roads were built or renovated, and 25-kilometer-long 14- and 20-inch transmission pipelines were laid and run.

South Azadegan oil field, located in 80km Southwest of Ahvaz, the capital of Khuzestan Province, adjacent to Iran-Iraq border, is a joint field having an area of 765 square kilometers, which is estimated to have 27 billion barrels of crude oil in place.
