A total of 85,200 children were born last year, 3.7 percent less than in the previous year, the Office reported. With the number of deaths during the same period surpassing 127,000, the population saw a decline of 42,000.

Previously, there were only five years when the number of births fell below 90,000: 2011, 2013, 2018, 2019, and 2022. However, it never dipped below 88,000 in any given year.

"The positive balance of international migration lowered the natural decrease of the population, as a result of which, the estimated number of the resident population, updated on the basis of the 2022 census, was 9,580,000 at the end of 2023," the KSH said.
