“Today, we are witnessing a 10% to 25% increase in export of food industry’s various products, and we are also witnessing the expansion of activities in steel and petrochemicals units,” Mortazavi said.

He described Russia as a big market for Iran due to the Western sanctions against the Northern neighbor, and said, “We can be among Russia’s main trade partners in import of grains and export of goods.”

Mortezavi expressed the hope that with measures adopted and cooperation of banks, other institutions and ministries in settlement of problems, Iran’s ranking in trade would improve significantly in the world by the yearend.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Islamic Republic of Iran is being forecast to produce 19.2 million tons of cereals in 2022, 4.9 million tons more than the figure for the previous year, in which the total production stood at 14.3 million tons.

The FAO projected Iran’s wheat production to increase by 4 million tons (over 44 percent) this year to 13 million tons. Last year, Iran produced only 9 million tons of wheat due to drought. The highest amount of rain-fed crop production is related to wheat, with a 71.5% share of the total output, followed by barley with a 15% share of the whole production.
