Iranian Specialists Develop System to Detect Faults in Underground Cables with Traveling Waves
The plan presented by the Iranian technology team is an underground cable troubleshooting system named ‘Kashef’ which has been designed and implemented to detect and find the location of faults in underground cables.
“This system is used in various industries like steel, petrochemical and distribution companies which are part of the distribution network in the form of underground cables,” said Falak Monfared, one of the researchers of the plan.
He underlined that the system has been designed based on the needs of different industries, adding, “This system enjoys the capability to identify hard errors (damage to cables).”
Monfared explained that the system emits a pulse and detects the exact location of the fault by moving back and forth.
In a relevant development earlier this year, a senior Iranian official had also said that the problem of disruption in the internet network of the country, due to the disconnection of optical fibers, was resolved domestically with the help of a knowledge-based company, noting that 720 gigabytes were added to Iran’s internet capacity.
The Iranian company repaired the damaged optical fiber cable (GBI) in the seabed of the Persian Gulf, which occurred earlier this year and led to the disruption and reduction of international communication capacity in the country; it managed to first locate the damaged electrical optical fiber cables in the deep sea and then repaired and restored the damaged part, which was four kilometers in length, in a difficult and complex operation. The measure saved time and reduced costs amid the harsh US sanctions against the country.
Amir Mohammadzadeh Lajevardi, the CEO of Infrastructure Communications Company of Iran, said that repairing the optical fiber cable added 720GB to the country’s internet capacity.
“This technology which was used by cable laying and repairing, will save 20 million dollars in foreign currency annually for the country, and we can also give services to the regional countries,” he said.
