Oil shale samples have so far been sent abroad for analysis and 3D imaging which, in addition to using foreign exchange, caused the leakage of data of Iran’s oil reservoirs to other countries.

Neda Mahmoudi, a senior medical physics expert in the research and development department of the technological company, explained that the device is a non-destructive x-ray 3D imaging machine.

She noted that performance of the 3D imaging device is similar to clinical CT scan imaging, adding, “It has an X-ray source and detector, and its technology is based on X-rays. The device is designed in two versions for medical and industrial research applications.”

“The NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) sample of this device, which has mostly industrial applications, is used for imaging electronic, mechanical and biological objects,” Mahmoudi said.

According to her, sending samples abroad, in addition to using foreign currency, would cause information leakage to other countries, noting, “An instance is in the field of petroleum engineering, where oil shale needs to be scanned, and by sending its samples abroad, information about oil reservoirs would be leaked; therefore, the home-made device is, specially, useful in the field of petroleum engineering.”

Oil shale is an organic-rich fine-grained sedimentary rock containing kerogen from which liquid hydrocarbons can be produced. In addition to kerogen, general composition of oil shales constitutes inorganic substance and bitumens.
