Tehran says US undermined Islamabad MoU, calls on security council to act
Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, submitted a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the Security Council, alleging that Washington had failed to honor its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding signed on June 17, 2026.
According to the letter, the United States breached key provisions of the agreement through military operations against Iran, sanctions, restrictions on Iranian oil exports, and actions related to navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran also accused Washington of supporting Israeli military operations in Lebanon, arguing that such actions violated the framework of the accord.
The letter states that the agreement was intended to establish a reciprocal framework for resolving disputes through diplomacy but claims US actions have effectively rendered it inoperative.
Iran called on the UN Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities under the UN Charter by taking "immediate and decisive measures" to stop what it described as continued US violations, prevent further escalation, and ensure accountability.
The letter also includes a chronology of alleged violations between June 18 and July 13, 2026, citing military strikes, sanctions, threats by US officials, and measures affecting maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz as evidence of repeated breaches of the memorandum.
Tehran reaffirmed that it would continue to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interests against any acts of aggression.
