Iran and U.S. Reach Preliminary Agreement on Key Principles in Geneva Talks
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who led Tehran’s negotiating team, described the discussions as constructive, noting that both sides were able to agree on certain issues in principle. Speaking to national Iranian television, he said the talks marked “good progress compared to the previous meeting” and signaled that a pathway toward an agreement has begun.
Prior reports from the IRNA correspondent in Geneva indicated that sources close to the Iranian delegation described the talks as “very serious,” with preliminary agreements reached on key matters. The delegations were expected to consult with their respective capitals before continuing discussions on more detailed aspects.
Bloomberg reported that the two sides have agreed in principle to hold a third round of negotiations. Araghchi emphasized that the current talks focused solely on nuclear issues and cautioned that moving from preliminary agreements to drafting a formal text would be more complex.
He also noted that both Iran and the United States hold positions that will require time to reconcile, underscoring the ongoing nature of the discussions. While no date has been set for the next round, the parties agreed to continue exchanging views and working on potential agreement texts as the diplomatic process advances.
