“Iran imports 300 to 400 tons of spirulina algae annually but only 20 tons are produced domestically, one-third of which is produced at the Islamic Azad University’s Tabriz branch and in greenhouses and algae breeding ponds,” Arash Ranjbaran told ANA on the sidelines of Asr-e Omid event in the Northwestern city of Tabriz.

“A 1,400 cubic meter algae breeding pond is in operation, and another 2,400 cubic meters will be added by September, increasing production threefold,” he underlined.

In a relevant development in 2023, specialists at a knowledge-based company in Iran had also succeeded in production of a variety of food and pharmaceutical supplements and animal and poultry feed by using spirulina algae.

“Our company is the first knowledge-based firm active in the field of producing nutritional supplements based on spirulina microalgae in Iran which has received the health apple label from the Food and Drug Administration of Iran,” said Vahid Mohammadi, the managing director of the knowledge-based company.

“We succeeded in producing all types of microorganisms based on spirulina and chlorella algae to make all kinds of human food supplements in the form of powder, capsules and tablets, and all kinds of livestock and poultry feed,” he added.

Mohammadi noted that different types of probiotic microorganisms used in industries, human medicinal and nutritional supplements in the form of capsules, human medicinal and nutritional supplements in the form of powder, and veterinary supplements based on algae are among the products of his company.

“This type of algae is a suitable option for people who suffer from iron, protein and mineral deficiency, and it can also be highly useful for liver patients,” he underlined.

Noting that the product contains protein, Mohammadi said, “The relative advantage of this algae is that it is odorless compared to other similar samples.”
