"The electricity swap with Turkey has started and currently we receive 3.5 days of electricity from the country and export 3.5 days in return," Spokesman of the Iranian Electricity Industry Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi said.

He added that "synchronization is now being carried out and we have put 600 megawatts into the exchange as a test, and with the latest technology in the world, we are proceeding with the work as a back-to-back post".

Rajabi Mashhadi also said that supplying gas to power plants is now the Iranian oil ministry's priority.

He added that the plan is focused on preventing blackouts in power plants due to lack of fuel, noting that at present, more than 70% of power plants are fed with gas.

Rajabi Mashhadi announced plans to export electricity to Europe, adding that Turkey is among the routes.

Earlier this month, Iran announced that it has started efforts to link its power grid to Russia in cooperation with other regional states.

“The initial synchronization with Russia has been carried out and we will perform technical works to synchronize electricity networks of Iran, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia to be able to have electricity link-up with Russia,” Iranian Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian said.

He added that Tehran wants to stabilize its electricity supplies through a link to the Russian power network, adding that his ministry is currently bolstering its technical capabilities to expand the project.

Experts say a synchronization of power grids of Iran and Russia will enable Iran to launch electricity exports to Qatar and other countries in the region.
