Iranian Scientists Make Environmentally-Friendly Nanostructured Supercapacitor

TEHRAN (ANA)- Iranian researchers at the University of Mazandaran developed a nanostructured supercapacitor that offers very high specific capacitance, very low electrical resistance, appropriate energy density and power density along with good cyclic stability.

The design, modeling and construction of a high-performance nanostructured supercapacitor is a research project by Shahram Qassemi-Mir, a faculty member of the University of Mazandaran, which he completed with the support of the National Science Foundation of Iran.

“After designing the structures of the supercapacitor, their properties were evaluated by computer modeling. Subsequently, these compounds were prepared in the laboratory and subjected to structural and electrochemical studies as supercapacitor electrode materials. Finally, after optimizing various components, a laboratory supercapacitor sample was manufactured,” said Qassemi-Mir.

He explained that theoretical computer studies and practical laboratory research conducted during the implementation of this project showed that carbon nanomaterials are ideal options in the design of electrodes for supercapacitor systems due to their high surface area, significant electrical conductivity, and very high physical and chemical stability. “The supercapacitor prepared in this study offered very high specific capacitance, very low electrical resistance, appropriate energy density and power density, along with good cyclic stability. In producing the supercapacitor, we also considered low manufacturing cost, easy manufacturing method, and the use of available and preferably environmentally-friendly raw materials,” Qassemi-Mir said.

Also, in 2022, a senior academician said that researchers of Iran's Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research had made various types of electrochemical supercapacitors.

Nour Ali Mohammadi, a senior member of  the Center’s scientific board, announced the completion of a technological research project for manufacturing "electrochemical supercapacitor based on nanoporous carbon compounds" in the Chemical Industries Development Research Institute and said that technology of making electrochemical supercapacitor with capacities of 20, 50, 100 and 200 Farad has been localized by the Iranian experts.

"Iran-made electrochemical supercapacitors have been manufactured based on relevant standards and can compete with foreign-made ones," he underscored.

"Electrochemical supercapacitors are among widely used and high-tech electrical equipment, which, with characteristics like high power density, suitable energy density, very fast charging capability, very long life, and capability of being used in wide range of temperatures, are considered as one of the most important sources of energy storage which are used in electric and hybrid vehicles and equipment such as uninterruptible power supply (UPS), power supply networks, wind turbines, radars and military ammunition, radio communication equipment, etc," Mohammadi added.

He pointed to approximately three billion dollars annual trade of electrochemical supercapacitors and said, "The Center is prepared to attract investment to establish electrochemical supercapacitors production line in Iran."
