“The list of the top 1% of the most-cited scientists in the world has been extracted from the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database belonging to Clarivit Analytics, which has been analyzed and assessed by the Science and Technology Citation and Monitoring Institute in October 2022,” Peyman Salehi said.

He added that in the first stage, over 1,400 names of Iranian researchers (in the form of last name and abbreviated form of the first name) were identified in the database of the basic indicators of science using advanced and automatic methodology, among nearly 100,000 highly cited researchers in the world.

Then, the research experts of the Science and Technology Citation and Monitoring Institute performed various specialized processes to disambiguate the list and accurately identify all the documents attributed to each researcher, Salehi said.

“As a result, 841 researchers affiliated to Iran were identified in different areas whose research and citation performance was based on four scientometric indicators, including assessment of the ratio of the total number of citations received to the total number of citing articles, the average number of self-citations per article, the average percentage of self-citations and the ratio of the total number of citations received (without considering self-citation) to the number of citing articles (without considering self-citation). These indices were matched with global macro data and normal values (standard) were extracted for each index,” he stated.

Salehi said that a nearly 340% growth is observed in the number of Iranian researchers which have entered in the list of the top 1% in the world in a four-year period.

The Essential Science Indicators database reveals emerging science trends as well as influential individuals, institutions, papers, journals, and countries in any scientist’s field of research.

Recognizing the true pioneers in their fields over the last decade, demonstrated by the production of multiple highly-cited papers that rank in the top one percent by citations for field and year in the Web of Science. Of the world’s scientists and social scientists, Highly Cited Researchers truly are one in 1,000.

With science trend statistics drawn from more than 12 million articles from over 12,000 global journals, Essential Science Indicators delivers the in-depth coverage you need to effectively analyze and benchmark research performance, identify significant trends, rank top performers, and evaluate potential employees and collaborators.

In 2021, Iranian scientists published more than 77,000 scientific articles in the Scopus database, and ranked 15th in the world.
